Why Is My AC Freezing Up? What the Ice Is Telling You
First: turn the system off, set the fan to “on” to thaw, and leave it a few hours. Running a frozen AC can damage the compressor.
Why it freezes
Two causes: not enough warm air over the indoor coil, or low refrigerant. Both drop the coil below freezing.
Airflow (usual suspect)
Low refrigerant
Running too cool at night
Running the AC when it’s already in the 60s can freeze the coil; avoid running it then.
