Why it freezes
Two causes: not enough warm air over the indoor coil, or low refrigerant. Both drop the coil below freezing.
Airflow (usual suspect)
Most freezing traces to weak airflow, usually a dirty filter (see how often to change your furnace filter). Clean filter but still freezing = coil/blower needs a professional cleaning.
Low refrigerant
Low charge drops coil pressure/temperature and ices up; it means a leak (see why your AC is not cooling). Licensed-tech job.
Running too cool at night
Running the AC when it’s already in the 60s can freeze the coil; avoid running it then.
