How Often Should You Change Your Furnace Filter?

Short answer: 1-inch filter every 1-3 months; 2-inch ~3 months; 4-5-inch media filters every 6-12 months. Pets, allergies, and heavy use = more often. When in doubt, pull it and look; if you can’t see light through it, it’s overdue.

A clogged filter chokes airflow: in summer it can freeze the coil (why your AC freezes up) or leave the house warm (why your AC is not cooling); in winter it can overheat the furnace (a furnace blowing cold air). Clean filter = airflow, efficiency, longer equipment life.

Find the slot at the return/furnace, note the size on the frame, slide the new one in with the airflow arrow pointing toward the furnace.
