Every homeowner needs to know a good plumber, but finding one you trust can be a challenge. A quick Google search will reveal dozens of plumbers in your area, but how do you know who to trust? How do you know who has the right credentials and who doesn’t? And how do you go about finding that information?

1. What is your specialty?

Before you ask any other questions, it’s important to verify that the plumber you’re talking to actually does the type of maintenance or repair you need. There are many types of plumbers out there: residential, commercial, sanitary, service and repair, and more.

For example, to un-clog your sink, it’s best to call a residential plumber who specializes in service and repair. Alternatively, to address a home-wide disruption in your water supply, call a water supply plumber.

2. Do you have a license and insurance?

Once you’re sure the plumbing company you’re talking to offers the service you need, ask them if their plumbers are properly licensed and insured.

To be considered a licensed plumber, a plumber has to have a high-school diploma or GED, a trade school certificate in plumbing, 2-5 years of apprenticeship experience, and local codes to receive his/her license.

Insurance is also crucial; if an uninsured plumber causes damage or gets hurt while working on your property, you may have to pay for it.

3. Are you willing to get permits for this project?

If a repair requires a plumber to do work that could negatively impact the city sewer system, the plumber you choose must be willing to get a permit. If the plumber has all their city permits in line, you can trust them. If not, start looking into other options.

4. What are your hours?

While it’s true that some plumbers (including us!) offer emergency services, some companies only work within normal business hours. That means if your pipes burst or your toilet floods at 4 in the morning, you need to know your plumber will be there when you need help.

5. Can I get a breakdown of all your fees?

Unfortunately, a lot of plumbing companies make their work seem less expensive by leaving some fees off the initial estimate they give to you. A reputable, trustworthy plumber will make sure you’re never surprised by hundreds of dollars in fees you didn’t expect to pay.
